Modern Deductive Logic
New School for Social Research: Philosophy
CRN: 17305
Credits: 3
This course offers an introduction to the concepts and methods of sentential and first-order logic. Students will learn how to translate sentences and arguments from natural language into a formal system, determine validity and invalidity, identify logical equivalences, tautologies, and contradictions, and construct proofs and derivations within the system. We will also reflect on the nature of logic and its role in philosophical practice: Is there one true logic, or could there be alternatives? What is the relation between philosophy and logic? Can the history of philosophy help us answer these questions? No previous knowledge of logic is assumed, but a willingness to engage with abstract reasoning is required.
