Modern Deductive Logic
New School for Social Research: Philosophy
CRN: 17305
Credits: 3
This course offers an introduction to the concepts and methods of sentential and first-order logic. We will learn how to translate sentences and arguments from natural language into a formal system, how to establish validity and invalidity, identify logical equivalences, tautologies, and contradictions, and construct proofs and derivations within the system. No previous knowledge of logic is assumed, but a willingness to work at a high level of abstraction is required.
