Marx Today
New School for Social Research: Philosophy
CRN: 18744
This seminar introduces speakers who are at the leading edge of revising Marxist thinking for contemporary times: Jonathan Beller, a professor in humanities and media studies at Pratt Institute and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, English, and Film Studies, Barnard College, Columbia University. Craig Calhoun, a sociologist from Arizona State University and the former Director of the London School of Economics and the former President of the Berggruen Institute. Robert Meister, a philosopher from the department of the History of Consciousness at the University of Santa Cruz and the author of the recent book, Justice Is An Option. These intellectuals are from sociology, philosophy, and media studies who keep the heritage of Marx's critiques of capitalism alive in their respective disciplines. Benjamin Lee, the host of the seminar, is a professor of anthropology and philosophy at the New School. Former Dean of NSSR and former Provost of the New School, he has written a new book, The Treadmill Affect, about the linguistic turn, affect theory, and Marxian theory. The four speakers will take different perspectives on Marx (sociology, anthropology, linguistics, philosophy, literary studies, and media studies) and see whether Marx is relevant in the age of Trump.
