Later Heidegger
New School for Social Research: Philosophy
CRN: 19599
Credits: 3
In these lectures, we will follow the long road from Heidegger's Being and Time, his magnum opus from 1927, to his very late lecture 'Time and Being', from 1962. In particular, we will focus on Heidegger's shifting understanding of metaphysics and what is meant by ‘the overcoming of metaphysics’ in relation to Carnap and Wittgenstein. We will consider in detail the crucial problem of nihilism in the contexts of German idealism (Kant, Fichte, Jacobi) and Russian anarchism (Turgenev, Dostoevsky) before considering how Heidegger’s readings of Nietzsche and Ernst Juenger permit nihilism to be posed in relation to what Heidegger calls ‘the history of being’ and the question of technology. We will end with a consideration of 'Building, Dwelling, Thinking' and the reframing of Heidegger’s entire phenomenological project around the theme of Appropriation (das Ereignis).
