Psychoanalytic Cases — What is a case? And what kind of information is it meant to convey? What are the ethics of case studies? And why do Freud’s five cases remain so ubiquitous after 100 years of psychoanalysis? We will look at cases, from Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Kohut, Fraiberg, Dewald, Dolto, Lacan and many others (including looking at transcribed psychoanalytic sessions from recordings), as well as, writing about the function, place, genre, and pedagogical value of cases. Importantly, there are also those that write against the use of case histories in psychoanalysis, and see in most case histories only an example of the pathology of the analyst.
