What is money, and what is its relationship to political power and state sovereignty? Beginning with a reading of Simmel, we analyze contemporary and historical systems of economic ledgers: from national to community currencies and localized rural barter systems, to Islamic finance and blockchain. The course interrogates monetary and financial systems, governance, and statecraft at the nexus of comparative politics and political economy.
