Trauma Research and Clinical Practice
New School for Social Research: Psychology
CRN: 3798
Credits: 1 TO 3
Despite being a frequently-occuring and life-altering experience, trauma has, until recently, remained in the shadows, in society, in research, and in clinical training. This course will examine the topic of trauma, incorporating theoretical, psychobiological, and research perspectives. The course will begin with background on the history, science, and controversies associated with the problem of trauma, with an emphasis on the physiological adaptations to trauma, and how this physiology undergirds and mirrors psychological experiences and behavior. The course will then review the treatment research and its connections to the theoretical models explaining the impact of trauma. Finally, the course will teach fundamentals of trauma assessment, diagnosis (including reliable administration of interviews), and intervention with children and adults, including the basis for treatment innovation and emerging models. *Students from programs other than NSSR Psychology may register for this course with permission of instructor.*
