Credits: 3

This seminar is a survey of contemporary debates in the philosophy of perception, focused on color vision. We will critically examine recent work on the following questions: • Does language shape perception? • Can the qualitative character of perceptual experience be adequately put into words (or, alternately, communicated through art)? • What makes a process perceptual? Is there a border between perception and cognition? If so, how should it be defined? Although the seminar will be centered on recent work on vision, we will also discuss some traditional philosophical questions about color: Does the discovery of inter- and intra-personal variation in color experience undermine the epistemic standing of color vision? Can we really know what someone else’s color experience is like? Are colors real?
