The number of refugees worldwide has been continually rising, approaching 40 million. Many of them are unlikely to return to their home countries in the foreseeable future. Receiving societies /countries are therefore faced with the challenge of promoting the inclusion and integration of refugees. Successful integration in turn requires a sound understanding of relevant psychological processes. A central goal of the seminar is to analyze the determinants and consequences of integration-relevant psychological processes in refugees and residents of the host country based on current theories and empirical findings. First, based on the PARI (Psychological Antecedents of Refugee Integration) model, students will become familiar with the distinctive, psychologically relevant characteristics of refugee migration in contrast to migration in general, namely the forcedness of migration and the associated risks and dangers (perils). We will examine how these characteristics affect integration-relevant psychological processes in refugees and members of the host countries. To this end, we examine predictors of subjectively perceived migration forcedness (e.g. perceived flight reasons and push factors) and the consequences of perceived forcedness (e.g. higher empathy and receptiveness, but also lower attribution of learning motivation). For inspiring, in-depth learning experiences, we will have short presentations, small group work, Q&A sessions and critical discussions of implications and transfer potential.
