Graduate Course
Depression and Anxiety
Spring 2026
Taught By: Sam Winer
Section: A

CRN: 17152

Credits: 3

This seminar unpacks the empirical and theoretical psychological literature on depression and anxiety. The overarching foci of the course are twofold, each of which is twofold. First, readings will focus on (1) understanding the historical precedent and modern argument for conceptualizing the somewhat heterogeneous symptoms associated with depression and anxiety into disorders organized by these terms and (2) interrogating the logic that drives these conceptualizations. Second, readings, thought experiments, and projects will encourage students (1) to conceptualize a different understanding of and framework for these concepts and (2) to imagine translation to and implementation of a different way to psychologically treat the conditions often referred to as depression and anxiety, as many of these conditions (particularly those referred to as depression) neither currently nor historically respond well to treatment. *Open to Psychology PhD students only.
