First Year Training Clinic Practicum
New School for Social Research: Psychology
CRN: 3897
Credits: 1
This year-long practicum course led by the clinic director is required for 1st year clinical psychology students and is focussed on psychotherapy training at The Safran Center for Psychological Services. First-year clinical students carry 2-3 cases in time-limited relationally-oriented individual psychotherapy for the duration of the academic year and beyond. Students receive 2 hours of weekly supervision (individual and group) provided by experienced clinicians, who support technical aspects of practice such as documentation as well as professional identity development. The practicum course component will focus on the art and science of clinical practice, including approaches to clinical interviewing, risk assessment, initial formulation, case conceptualization, treatment planning, and clinical documentation. Learning is dynamic and interactive, combining readings, mixed media, and role playing. Students will also gain practice in presenting their work via different modalities typical in clinical practice. Students are required to attend supervision and related courses weekly, be prepared to discuss assigned readings and materials, and participate actively in discussions. Students' progress in their clinical work is assessed by individual and group supervisors twice per academic year, allowing ample feedback on each student's development as a clinician. Scheduling therapy sessions and individual supervision hours are flexible and dependent on individual schedules.
