Taught By: Evangeline Riddiford Graham
Section: A

CRN: 12557

In this fast-paced practicum, students will assist in the production of Public Seminar, the online publication of The New School. Working closely with senior managing editor Evangeline Riddiford Graham and executive editor James E. Miller, students will learn how to copyedit and edit articles in a newsroom environment, collaborate with industry professionals, create posts in a content management system, and connect with readers via marketing and social media. In weekly in-person editorial meetings, students will have the opportunity to pitch contributors and topics for coverage. Over the semester, they will also be invited to pitch and write articles for Public Seminar, receiving detailed feedback from the editors. The Public Seminar practicum is suitable for students committed to developing their editorial skills at a professional level. Students will receive assignments on a weekly basis; the ability to work to deadlines is vital. Public Seminar’s website features daily posts on a variety of topics—from contemporary philosophers in conversation to student critics reviewing books, films, and music. It is a global public commons, home to open debate, new voices, and academic research adapted for a general audience. For more, see publicseminar.org.
