This course explores contemporary approaches to jazz composition through the lens of melody, voice-leading, counterpoint, formal structure, intervalic approaches, rhythmic cycles, pitch set theory, and so on. Through a close reading of music by significant jazz composers and practical compositional work, students will learn to develop and refine their compositional process. Pre-req for this course is completion of JCM Fundamentals Comp 4.
