This fundamental songwriting course is designed for both aspiring and experienced songwriters. Students will learn structural elements of the contemporary pop song form through critical listening, analysis, historical reference, methodology and actual writing practice. Basic tools will be outlined and then applied with weekly writing assignments. Students must be able to sing or play an instrument in order to complete the writing assignments. Knowledge and use of digital audio workstations are encouraged though not required for recording of their songs. No previous songwriting experience is required, but helpful. A basic understanding of music theory is a must. The aim of this course is to help students develop a deeper understanding of the American pop song form and establish a basic artistic discipline as a creative songwriter.
