Songwriting Fundamentals
Spring 2025
Taught By:
Section: A

CRN: 11044

Credits: 2

This fundamental songwriting course is designed for aspiring and experienced songwriters, as well as non-musicians who are interested in the art and craft of songwriting. Students will learn structural elements of the classic folk/pop/rock song form through critical listening, analysis, historical reference, methodology and actual writing practice. Basic tools will be outlined and then applied with regular songwriting assignments. Students who aren’t able to play an instrument are welcome, but must be willing to sing (either unaccompanied or with an accompanist) in order to complete the writing assignments. Knowledge and use of digital audio workstations are encouraged, though not required for the recording and presentation of songs. No previous songwriting experience is required, but helpful. A basic understanding of music theory is also helpful but not required. The aim of this course is to help students develop a deeper understanding of song forms and elements, and establish a basic artistic discipline as a songwriter.
