Grad cross list. Trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas leads this class in ear training practice using the music of Thelonious Monk and Johann Sebastian Bach as learning material. Students will work on hearing and performing pieces by both composers, enhancing their aural accuracy through work hearing and performing intervals, rhythms, harmony, and examining the challenges presented by works of various difficulty. Students will sing as well as play these materials, which will include an examination of the similarities and differences between the two composers. Attention will also be given to the ear training skills required for improvisation. Students will be expected to learn the materials well enough to internalize and improvise using these pieces.
