Brazilian Ensemble

Fall 2019

Taught By: Richard Boukas

Section: A

CRN: 1065

Credits: 2

Acclaimed Brazilian music exponent Richard Boukas offers two contrasting ensembles in alternating semesters. Both ensembles require strong technical and reading skills and musicians committed to a team work ethic. Concert preparation can involve extra sectional rehearsals outside regular meeting time. Final enrollment is at the discretion of the instructor after audition. Fall Semester: Brazilian Choro Ensemble is dedicated to Brazil’s unique tradition of virtuoso instrumental music, blending European and Afro-Brazilian dance forms with Classical and Jazz foundations. Repertoire spans 150 years: from early nationalist composers Nazareth, Gonzaga and Medeiros to 20th century masters Pixinguinha, Gnattali, Jacob do Bandolim and contemporary innovators Hermeto Pascoal, Jovino Santos Neto and Guinga. Those with a Jazz and/or Classical background are invited to audition. Instrumentation: flute, soprano sax (clarinet double), alto sax (flute double), 3 guitarists: two 6-string, one 7-string, cavaquinho double. 5-string electric bass, drums with strong pandeiro double and other hand percussion. Spring Semester: Brazilian Jazz Ensemble performs contemporary forms of samba, choro, baião, frevo, marcha rancho, maracatú and other Brazilian genres in fusion with jazz and popular traditions. Featured composers are Hermeto Pascoal and current/former band members Jovino Santos Neto, Itiberê Zwarg; contemporary giants Guinga, Toninho Horta, Sérgio Santos and others. Instrumentation: two saxophonists: soprano/tenor (clarinet optional); alto with strong flute double (clarinet optional), guitarist who can function both as a melodic and accompanimental instrument (fingerstyle technique a plus), vocalist with instrumental level scatsinging and aptitude for singing in Portuguese, pianist, bassist (5-string electric) and drums with previous experience in Brazilian rhythms.

By audition, at the instructor's discretion.
