The 1990s contemporary sound was a popular music genre that combined rhythm and blues with elements of pop, soul, funk, hip hop and electronic music. The 90s style music featured a distinct production with drum machine rhythms often combined with live instruments. Contemporary 90s R&B vocalists made creative use of melismas (often called riffs or runs), smooth, breathy vocals and lush styled background harmonies. This ensemble will explore the music of this genre made popular by artists such as Aliyah, TLC, SWV, Usher, Brandy and Brownstone. The ensemble will consists of a rhythm section: keys, bass, guitar and drums. The ensemble is limited to 12 vocalists. There will be an audition to choose the 12 vocalists. For the audition, the vocalists will be asked to prepare a song from the 90s R&B style or a song similar to the genre.
