“Lyrics and Lyricism” is a workshop/seminar course created for songwriters and interpreters. In this class, we deepen our lyric writing and song analysis, exploring the complex relationship between words and music to better understand these aspects of songcraft. Through group discussions and workshops, we learn the many ways we can “read” a song. We will closely examine lyrics, observe how different lyrical techniques establish or subvert genre, voice, and authority in performance, and account for how certain lyrical techniques have affected our broader world.
