The compositions and language of Charlie Parker and his contemporaries will be studied through listening, emulated through memorization, and implemented through performance of the repertoire, and concepts introduced. During this course you will be required to learn by ear and memorize the melodies, harmony, and rhythm section hits for the decided upon repertoire and to perform in the performance space by memory. The goal of the course is to develop a deeper understanding of Charlie Parker’s music and to become familiar and comfortable with the rhythmic language and manner in which the musicians of this period created, reacted, and interacted musically. The ultimate goal of the class is not to play exactly like Charlie Parker but to achieve a deeper understanding of his musical approach and to be able to CREATE comfortable and freely WITHIN it. Recommended Prerequisite: Completion of the Bebop Harmony class.
