Open to all graduate and undergraduate students (COPA and beyond) The Social and Universal Ramifications of African American Music (Jazz) is an interdisciplinary seminar that combines lecture, masterclass, and workshop formats to explore the global influence and historical depth of African American musical traditions, with a particular emphasis on jazz. This course is open to instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, actors, arts managers, and students from all disciplines who seek to engage critically with the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of this music. Under the guidance of NEA Jazz Master and Professor Reggie Workman, students will examine the expansive legacy of African American music through the lenses of the African diaspora, social history, racial identity, resistance, and the collaborative practices that shaped its development. Weekly meetings will include structured lectures, guided listening, historical research assignments, and open forums for discussion. Select classes will feature extended Q&A sessions and masterclass-style dialogues, offering students the opportunity to engage directly with the instructor and with guest artists or scholars, when applicable. Over the course of ten weeks, beginning with an introductory session in the first week of the semester, students will develop individual or collaborative research-based projects that culminate in a final public presentation or performance. This culminating event is designed to synthesize the semester’s learning outcomes and foster interdisciplinary exchange. No audition is required; however, final enrollment is subject to the instructor’s approval following the first class meeting. Regular attendance, active participation, and critical engagement are essential components of the course.
