FUTURISTIC CONCEPTS IN MUSIC
College of Performing Arts: Jazz
CRN: 17039
Credits: 2
Originally known as "Free Jazz", this course was renamed "Futuristic Concepts in Music" to more accurately reflect its theoretical and conceptual depth. The earlier term often implied an absence of structure, leading to misconceptions about the music’s foundation. In this course, students will engage with the core principles and advanced concepts that inform this progressive musical language. Enrollment is open only to students who have demonstrated proficiency in conventional musical concepts. Interested students will be required to audition during the first week of class. Through ensemble performance and composition, students will explore specific tone rows, modes, and scales as the basis for creating new works. Compositions may include time signatures but will intentionally exclude key signatures, encouraging creativity within defined parameters. This approach develops technical precision while fostering imaginative and original thinking. By the end of the course, students will gain greater confidence in their individual artistic identity and an expanded understanding of contemporary composition.
