Afro Latin Jazz Small Ensemble
College of Performing Arts: Jazz
CRN: 19669
Credits: 2
The term Afro Latin Jazz was introduced into the lexicon by the work of Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Prior to their existence there was Afro Cuban Jazz or Latin Jazz. The distinction is important. Jazz and "Latin" Jazz are born of the African Diaspora. The Pan African rhythms that permeate Jazz were brought to countries throughout the Indigenous world known as The Americas. We will perform Festejo from Peru, Son Jarocho from Veracruz, Tango from Argentina, Joropo from Venezuela and many other styles that have shaped the sounds of Afro Latin musical traditions. By audition at the instructor's discretion.
