Non Profit Activism: Creating New Structures of Power
College of Performing Arts: Technology/Business
CRN: 15732
Credits: 2
"This course fulfills the Music Business requirement for students majoring in Jazz and Contemporary Music. Creating one’s own structures of arts presentation is the key to understanding the the future. The name institutions, orchestras, performing arts centers are increasingly becoming irrelevant. Socially connected, non-elitist, arts presentation is possible when the reins are not necessarily controlled by wealth and power. In this course we will study from firsthand observation the creation of just such an entity from the grass roots beginnings to the construction of a peoples performing arts community center in the heart of East Harlem amongst other examples. Mission led arts activism will be examined from historical documents, audio-visual records and in-person interviews and presentations by front line non-profit activists who are changing the landscape based on integration of existing culture. Students will be expected to envision, create and build their own grass roots organizations and detail plans for the growth and eventual full realization of future arts leading organizations."
