Headphones & Hairspray! : Music of the ‘80s Ensemble
College of Performing Arts: Jazz
CRN: 19583
Credits: 2
The 1980s was an unforgettable decade for music, a time when genres, styles, and technologies blended, resulting in a unique soundscape. This decade witnessed the emergence of musical icons that left an indelible imprint on popular culture and music history. From the birth of electronic pop to the roots of alternative rock, via the explosion of metal and the rise of hip-hop, the 1980s was a blending of sonic innovation and experimentation. The 1981 launch of MTV made music visual, focusing on fashion, theatrics, and image as much as sound. The 80s music scene was characterized by a diverse range of styles. From Michael Jackson's infectious pop tunes, Madonna’s stylishly crafted songs and videos, the anthemic rock tracks of bands like U2 and Guns N' Roses, and the innovative sounds of hip hop artists such as LL Cool J, Public, Enemy, Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Peppa, the decade really embraced an eclectic mix of sounds. The music of the 80s stood as a representation of the times. The music allowed for the embracing of an unapologetic sense of individuality and innovation. Years later, the catchy melodies, infectious beats, and groundbreaking experimentation of the era continue to influence the always changing landscape of contemporary music. Students will audition and final ensemble line-up will be determined by the instructor.
