How can creative people support themselves and make their art? The economies of art have changed a lot over the modern period, but it is safe to say that with rare exceptions making art in any medium doesn't pay. In this course we will look at art, writing, cinema, music that is about the problem of getting paid for one's art. We will also look at some analytic texts that break down the structure of the culture industries and the place of the artist in it. Finally, we will examine the careers of a handful of artists who were able to balance creative freedom and money with varying degrees of success. [Tracks C, M, S]
