At a time of extensive change in our media environment, media theory provides conceptual tools for understanding that environment itself. Rather than focus on the "message" media transmits, media theory looks at the medium of transmission. As in Marshall McLuhan's famous phrase "the medium is the message." The form of media itself determines the possibilities of social, cultural and political life. We will look at some classic works in media theory to built our own critical approach to the contemporary media environment.
