After Images: Lit & Photograph
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Culture & Media
CRN: 15377
Credits: 3
How do words make us see? Like images, words haunt us. But they also make us “see” the unseeable, the invisible, or imaginary. These questions become more complicated with the birth of photography, which transformed the written word. This course considers the role of documenting and remembering—“afterimages”—in writing and photography. But it also asks what happens to writing after photography, which can stand beyond it, sometimes ethically, or stand alongside it as a companion. Forms and genres include the essay, poetry, the novel, criticism, and journalism, as well as theories of vision, photography, and post-photography in the digital age. [Tracks C, M]
