Trio of Dance Practices

Spring 2019

Taught By: Ana Garcia

Section: A

CRN: 6310

Credits: 2

This dance practice course offers students an opportunity to study a constellation of contemporary movement practices with three extraordinary dance artists: Lacina Coulibaly, Rokafella, and Juliette Mapp. Each instructor will teach for a six-week block, with one overlapping week with another instructor. Drawing from their particular experience and performance histories, the instructors will present a range of practices including hip hop, somatic studies, improvisation, and West African and African diasporic practices that emphasize syncopation and polyrhythm. The class explores the term “contemporary” within dance contexts, and considers various understandings of the body, virtuosity, and reasons for dancing. Space is limited and priority is given to dance majors.
