Introduction to Movement Practices
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 18214
Credits: 1
This studio practice course, open to all students, introduces practices and principles of contemporary dance and movement improvisation. Classes begin with a slow warm-up focused on anatomical landmarks and alignment principles, progressing to vigorous, rhythmic movement. Through exploring deep kinesthetic states of heightened awareness, students will develop the ability to practice and refine set movement sequences -- “remembered movement,” as termed by Steve Paxton -- as well as develop individual improvisational skills and the ability to collaborate and improvise with others. The course, explores movement and improvisation practices that are being utilized by some of the field's most progressive choreographers and movement-based artists. No prior dance training is necessary. This class is open to all students interested in exploring their physical imagination. Proviso: because space is limited, priority will be given to students interested in pursuing the contemporary dance major or minor.
