Field Trips: Dance and Time-Based Performance in NYC
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 18215
Credits: 4
New York City as campus: The Field Trips course is structured around weekly field-trips to exhibitions, screenings, and performances. Cost of students’ admission tickets (up to $200 per student) will be covered by the Department of the Arts and the Dean’s Office of Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School. The course promotes active participation in the wider field of dance and time-based performance, extending our space of learning beyond the classroom to NYC’s many performance spaces, art institutions and cultural organizations; the course claims the city as our campus. In situ, we will closely analyze works of dance and other time-based performance, discuss their historical context as well as the context of their presentation, and their significance today; for select trips, we will accompany artists, curators, and other art professionals in the field. We will visit performance spaces such as Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, The Chocolate Factory Theater, New York Live Arts, Performance Space NY, The Kitchen, and Pageant, as well as museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Art, and more. As a seminar plus course, we meet once a week for 2 hours and 40 minutes, with an additional 15 instructional hours; field trips will be supplemented with readings, in-class discussions, and weekly response paper assignments. *This LDAN course can be used to fulfill an Arts program LINA (InterArts) requirement.
