As the DJ Juliana Huxtable explains, “A good party makes you feel alive. It reminds you that you exist in a body and that you’re part of something bigger.” This hybrid studio course introduces students to historical relations between DJs and dancers from the 1980s to the present. Working with both a master DJ and an acclaimed street-club dancer, students acquire foundational skills and engage in experimental practice. Emphasis is placed on collaborative assignments as students study and perform together, drawing from the intertwined histories of street and club music and dance. Students from across The New School are welcome to register, although priority will be given to students who have either taken DJ Skills and Styles (LMUS 2020) or who have some prior dance experience. Both are encouraged to register. Students must also enroll in the corresponding practice session for this course. Note: for Contemporary Dance majors and minors, this course may be used to fulfill the Trio of Contemporary Dance Practices requirement.
