Dancing in the Streets: Art and Collective Practice
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 18060
Credits: 3
Dancing in the Streets is a hybrid studio-seminar course in which we will experience, research, and reflect on collective movement, performance, and artistic practices that can inhabit public and private spaces. Dancing in the Streets will include dance practices that can express collective joy, grief, and mark transitional events. The course is also an inquiry into how capitalism has continually erased opportunities for collective physical rituals which traditionally brought people together. We will develop movement practices that are outside (and in resistance to) the framework of organized entertainment and can manifest without the approval of authorities. Dancing in the Streets will grapple with and attempt to ameliorate the alienation created as result of social media, the pandemic, and the increased militarization of public spaces. The course will include spontaneous indoor and outdoor performances. No dance experience necessary.
