IHD-Harlem Dance and Education
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 2182
Credits: 4
IHD: Dance and Education explores the connection between engaged dance and elementary school literacy, mathematics and social studies while allowing students the opportunity to be civically engaged and contribute to the community. This course offers Lang students the opportunity to teach and mentor elementary school students through the "I Have a Dream" afterschool programs at PS 7 in East Harlem and PS 33 in Chelsea. During the Tuesday seminar sessions (held both synchronously on zoom and in person), Lang students will be exposed to critical pedagogy and transformative arts education as they explore the field of dance (and the arts) in education. On Thursday afternoons (and other days of the week, there is great flexibility with the fieldwork schedule) Lang students work directly with 3rd and 4th grade students in Harlem and Chelsea, to develop a curriculum for their small dance/music/art groups. At the end of the semester Lang students will help facilitate a shared performance by their IHD students for their families and community. Coursework also includes asynchronous work, comprised of readings, weekly written assessment papers, a midterm research paper, and a final project where students are required to create a syllabus for future teaching endeavors.
