Improvisation is a practice of deep awareness which accesses creativity through both conscious choice-making and the unconscious imagination In this studio/seminar class, we will explore the art of improvisation through text, movement, visual art, and music. We will read, listen to, and watch various artists' approaches to improvisation, and improvise with those forms, as well as develop our own method or scores for improvisitng..Artists we will study include Pauline Oliveros, Deborah Hay, Hilma Af Klimt, Bill Viola, Steve Paxton, Ralph Lemon, and John Cage, among others. Physical practice will be emphasized, but no dance experience is necessary. The class will culminate in a final performance at the Spring Dance Concert at New York Live Arts. *This LDAN course can be used to fulfill an Arts program LINA (InterArts) requirement.
