Dance Activism: Three Rebels
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 17369
Credits: 4
This course will center on the exploration of three dance artists/collectives - Urban Bush Women, Guillermo Gomez-Pena, and Okwui Okpokwasili - who significantly impact and reflect social justice, art activism, and the landscape of the inter-disciplinary voice that is dance/embodied-based. We will consider how these and other artists embrace and honor risk while remaining dedicated to naming and displacing hierarchical and colonial practice. Required reading, writing and viewing assignments will be complemented by collective art practice and field trips to live performances. The course is open to students across the arts and humanities.
