Capitalism is uniquely defined by the significant role played by private enterprise. What is the role of workers, managers, owners, stockholders, and communities in this central institution of capitalist society? How do the operations of business impact each of these groups? How does business promote or undermine social change? In this course, students will learn the history and theory of the business enterprise and its relation to the economy. We will look at theories of competition, market structure and business regulation, the role of labor unions and immigration, the process of technological innovation and the workings of the platform economy. We will learn the basics of corporate finance and corporate governance, including about stock markets and private equity. We will examine the consequences of business activity on standards of living, income distribution, technology, globalization, media, political action, and climate change. Students will become comfortable speaking about corporations and their financing, the structure of markets in which corporations compete, the process of private sector innovation and the role of shareholder activism and civil society organizations in creating corporate accountability to broader social goals. The course is recommended for students interested in social activism, in sustainable investing, in starting their own business, or working in politics, law, or the arts in ways that connect to business.
