This course looks at the interrelationships between mathematics and music from analytical, historical, and social perspectives. We will explore themes common to both disciplines such as pattern, repetition, and harmony. We will also discuss how mathematics can be used to understand how we experience sound through pitch, timbre, tuning etc. Music topics covered will include scales (diatonic and chromatic), intervals, rhythm, meter, form, melody, chords, progressions, temperament (equal, mean tone, Pythagorean), just intonation, overtones, timbre, and formants. Mathematical concepts covered will include number systems and counting, modular arithmetic, symmetry, and wave motion and harmonic analysis. Seminars will involve readings, discussions, analysis, and creative projects. No specific math or music background necessary although one previous class in either mathematics or music is recommended.
