New York City as campus: The Field Trips course is structured around weekly field-trips to exhibitions, screenings, and performances. Cost of students’ admission tickets (up to $200 per student) will be covered by the Department of the Arts and the Dean’s Office of Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School. The course promotes active participation in the wider field of visual arts, extending our space of learning beyond the classroom to NYC’s many art institutions and cultural organizations; the course claims the city as our campus. In situ, we will closely analyze works of art, discuss their historical context as well as the context of their exhibition, and their significance today; for select trips, we will accompany artists, curators, and other art professionals in the field. We will visit art museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Art at Americas Society, as well as art galleries in the Upper East Side, Chelsea, Brooklyn, cinemas such as Anthology Film Archives and the Filmmakers Cooperative, and more. As a seminar plus course, we meet once a week for 2 hours and 40 minutes, with an additional 15 instructional hours; field trips will be supplemented with readings, in-class discussions, and weekly response paper assignments. For LVIS majors, the course fulfills a practice-based art history/visual studies elective course requirement.
