Immerse yourself in Brazilian culture across music, theater, dance, film, and performance art. e will examine how artists have shaped and challenged ideas of “Brazilianness” over the past century. Students will engage with the vitality of Brazilian culture across time and genres: the early performance art of the São Paulo modernistas; the explosion of Black performance in samba, carnival, capoeira, and the Black Experimental Theater; the multi-genre Tropicália movement—from Teatro Oficina's productions to the films of Glauber Rocha, the music of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and the sensorial exhibitions of Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark; and the vibrant contemporary scene of Brazilian performance today. Through critical essays, video and audio documentation, as well as field trips to contemporary Brazilian performance in New York City, we will explore how artists have responded to racism, political repression, systemic inequality, and rapid social change. This course welcomes students from all disciplines who are curious about how performance shapes culture and national identity. No prior knowledge of Brazil is required.
