This course examines the dynamic intersections of performance, choreography, and moving-image media through feminist, queer, and decolonial frameworks. Drawing on Maya Deren’s Choreography for the Camera (1945), the curriculum examines how artists and theorists have redefined the camera as an agent of performance, collaboration, and critique rather than solely as a tool of documentation. The course investigates how bodies and images co-choreograph one another and considers the new forms of embodied knowledge that emerge when movement, sound, and vision are mediated through film and digital technologies. From Deren’s early cinematic experiments to contemporary works, the course connects choreography to wider visual, cultural, and political contexts. Students engage with artists such as Yvonne Rainer, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Ana Mendieta, and Rea Tajiri, who reimagine the moving image as embodied thought. The curriculum also highlights how Black, Indigenous, and diasporic artists use film to reshape visibility and historical memory. Through seminars, screenings, and studio work, students explore how media registers histories of resistance and possibility while experimenting with film and performance as connected aesthetic and political practices.
