Alongside clinicians, historians, and artists, students in this Civic Liberal Arts course will consider the social implications of psychoanalysis. Students will volunteer with the Greene Clinic’s Dream Collective and, alongside clinicians, invite passersby at the Brooklyn Public Library and in Fort Greene Park to write or draw their dreams. We will archive and attend to these documents in class and in monthly meetings with Greene. With “outsider” art, conceptual art, and the histories of institutional psychotherapy, we will question how and whether social life requires the repression of the unconscious. With Adorno, Lacan, and Freud, we will discover the unconscious, read speech, and ask whether value comes from recognition or taste. We will ask: how does perceptive capacity influence creative technique? Are critical aesthetic faculties inherited, or are they socially produced? Potentially, something new and beautiful will spring forth from gaps, slips, and free association.
