In this course, students will explore how writing attends to the ephemeral event of dance, performance, and other time-based and live works. Together we will use a variety of media that attempt to translate performance into more durable forms that in various ways attempt to capture, notate, or document live performance. From choreographic writing and notation to poetry and literature, artists’ books, digital projects, films, photographs, and even painting and sculpture, we will attend to the many emergent forms in which movement and time-based work manifests. Rather than privilege the live event, however, we will attune to the interdisciplinary methodologies that inform artistic research, process, and production—including descriptive, documentary, archival, and citational methodologies—and which, in turn, call for ever-expanding critical and analytic approaches to engage their mediated afterlives. The course offers analytic and creative frameworks for thinking and writing alongside performance—as researchers, critics, and creative writers—through engagements with artworks and recent scholarship in performance studies, art history, literary and translation studies, affect theory, disability studies, critical race theory, queer studies, and more. The course balances in-class discussion with visits to exhibitions, performances, and archives; and visits with artists, curators, critics, and editors. Students will develop a portfolio of their own short writing throughout the course, conduct one long-form interview, and contribute a critical essay or research paper to a publication collectively edited by the class.
