Arts senior seminars bridge the collective experience of studying the arts at Lang with students’ individual paths of study. The seminars foreground the process of formulating and realizing creative and intellectual projects within a supportive peer context. Students apply their research and creative skills, their ability to persuasively communicate ideas and approaches, and their capacity to meaningfully critique the work of their peers. Each student completes either a research-based creative project with a written component of 10 pages, or a traditional research paper of 30 pages. Students are evaluated both on their research and creative work and on the quality of their participation in collaborative workshops, individual conferences, and class presentations. In this senior seminar, which functions as a time-based performance-making work group, students will develop original time-based performance works and present these via the Lang Arts Capstone Projects website or in class. Each student will contribute a peer-reviewed reading to provide context for their performance project and will lead a class discussion on that reading. Additional readings and discussions will explore topics related to the creative process, spectatorship, and performance criticism, assisting students to critique each other’s performance research. Students will workshop their projects in class, revising and showing them at least four times before their final presentation. The required written component (10 pages) is an essay in which you consider your creative project in conversation with two or more outside sources (e.g., texts, performance works). Permission required.
