Fake News, Free Speech & Democracy In South Asia
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Journalism + Design
CRN: 13558
Credits: 4
This reading-intensive course examines historical and contemporary journalism practices and issues in South Asia (the lands within the modern-day borders of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, the Maldives, and India). Through a variety of texts, guest Q&As, lectures, screenings, and student presentations, students study media topics including free speech, misinformation, surveillance, internet access, social platforms, funding models, colonial legacies, and identity-based discrimination and violence. Students are introduced to a range of historical events that have shaped the region and its media, such as the Emergency of the 1970s and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. The class studies local cultures and religions, as well as the laws that affect South Asian journalists today, and also considers Western reporting practices in the region and the work of diasporic South Asian journalists. Because students are expected to conduct their own reporting and write their own article in this class, they are highly encouraged to complete at least one course in the Journalism + Design program before enrolling. This course satisfies the Liberal Arts Elective for the Journalism + Design Major.
