How did we arrive at a cultural landscape that’s produced #MeToo and mansplaining, but also TERFs and tradwives? This course will look at the intertwined histories of journalism and feminism, examining the sometimes contentious and other times complementary relationship between mainstream journalism and feminism as well as journalistic alternatives that emerged on the margins. "There really was nothing for women to read that was controlled by women,” Gloria Steinem said in 1971 when she co-founded Ms., the first national feminist magazine in the U.S. We will read stories from Ms., as well as successors like Bitch and Rookie; investigations by journalistic pioneers Ida B. Wells and Nellie Bly; criticism by bell hooks and Barbara Smith; war reporting by Martha Gellhorn and Elisa Griswold; punk and anarchist riot-grrrl zines; posts from feminist blogs like Jezebel and the Hairpin, and more, up through contemporary stories from places like Teen Vogue and the Cut. Students will research key moments in this history and create their own pieces of feminist journalism.
