In this course, students will focus on writing journalism in a variety of genres, including breaking news, more complex or in-depth enterprise stories, and features. Some reporting will be involved, but most of the work is writing, rewriting, and editing stories, with a focus on structure, mechanics, clarity, conciseness, and writing on deadline. Readings will including examples from newspapers and magazines. This course is recommended for students who have taken News, Narrative & Design II and are planning to write a longform story or a portfolio of articles for their Senior Capstone project; for students writing (or eager to write) for the New School Free Press; and for any Journalism + Design majors who want to strengthen their newswriting skills. This course fulfills the Form Elective for the Journalism + Design major.
