This course explores basic concepts and skills of Western music theory, focusing on dynamics, duration, pitch, and timbre through a range of historical and scientific perspectives. Topics include music terminology; intervals and ratios; melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic structures; and notation in treble and bass clefs. Inspired by John Cage's experimental music courses at The New School, the course offers problems and solutions in the field of composition and encourages inventiveness. Students also attend selected concerts outside of regular classtime. This is a required foundational course for Lang Contemporary Music majors/minors.
