Hip Hop Pedagogy & Practice
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 12308
Credits: 4
This course examines the power of the Hip Hop elements (MCing, DJing, graffiti, breakdancing, beatboxing, beatmaking, archiving) as tools for decolonizing curricula, fostering brave and safe classroom spaces, and empowering activism agency. Grounded in Hip Hop Culture and critical pedagogy, students will develop an analytic lens that will be used to "close-read" the world and respond to social justice issues on both artistic and educational platforms. Project-based work covers investigating personal educational experiences; the evolution and current iterations of the Hip Hop Elements; examining activist artwork in case studies from around the globe; drafting arts education lesson plans; and creating original artistic response pieces to issues of concern. As we consider Hip Hop cultural tenets remixed as a framework for teaching, learning and civic engagement, students will be introduced to local Hip Hop artist educators, explore mentorship and entrepreneurship on the grassroots community level, be exposed to various inclusive, equitable facilitation models, and take turns leading weekly creative cyphers. As a culminating project, students will propose and design a university-level course syllabus that reflects our studies, personal passions and an applied understanding of Hip Hop Pedagogy. This course previously offered as LINA 2039; not repeatable for credit, but this course can fulfill a LINA requirement for Contemporary Music and other Lang Arts majors. Students who previously took this course as LINA 2039 Hip Hop Pedagogy and Practice are not permitted to enroll.
