Music and Fashion
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 18208
Credits: 4
This course will trace the connections between various musical and fashion movements throughout history. Rather than focusing on a singular period of study, this course offers a selection of case studies we will draw from using a musicological perspective. Our inquiry will probe greater societal and cultural questions regarding class and power, as well as considering questions of fabrics, materials, and “uniforms” of class status. Crossover questions emerge between fashion and music histories and keywords like authenticity, in-group membership, color and symbols as affiliative aesthetics, and cultural artifacts. Drawing from readings in popular music, ethnomusicology, hip hop studies, fashion studies, environmental & sustainability studies, and anthropology, this course probes different disciplinary approaches to fashion culture and industries. Students will research these topics to develop a project reflective of this multi-disciplinary approach, including a no-purchase ethnography of a shopping experience. The course will also include excursions to fashion archives and exhibits in the city as well as guest speakers/artists.
