CRN: 18211
Credits: 3
This course explores the impactful role of early rave culture on contemporary music, its symbiotic relation with digital media art and design, and traces its parallel rise with the internet. The course will be a studio course (workshops & creative labs) paired with lectures, film-screenings, readings, and guest speakers (electronic music artists/digital media artists/rave culture pioneers). Studio project assignments, lectures, and readings will explore the role of the early internet in rave culture’s development, early DIY electronic music production ethos, and digital media art and design that began within rave culture and crossed into other subcultures as well as popular culture. Students will make their own rave track using loops, samples, and original sounds based on their abilities. The class will produce a rave together including djing, live performance, vjing, digital media installation, and the use of the internet for promotion.
